 "Palm" Section Renamed To "Handhelds"
 by Patrick Lenz, in freshmeat - Tue, Nov 18th 2003 09:41 UTC

Handheld computing has progressed, and Palm is no longer the near-monopolist of the market. We've decided to rename our Palm section and welcome a greater variety of mobile computing software. When we began accepting such software in our database 2.5 years ago, the computer you carried in your hand was probably a PDA and almost certainly ran PalmOS. Today, it's as likely that your pocket is filled by a camera which is also a cellphone. Or a phone which is also a PDA. Or a GPS machine which is also an 802.11b wireless networking device. Or an MP3 player which is also a phone and a camera and a PDA and a Dictaphone and a GameBoy emulator and a toothpick. It may run PalmOS or Linux or SymbianOS or another up-and-coming embedded system.

Rather than try to keep up with all the changes to come, we've decided to just rename palm.freshmeat.net to handhelds.freshmeat.net and welcome software written for all varieties of mobile computing devices and the various operating systems that power them. The only exception we'll make is that we've decided to continue to decline applications written for Microsoft Windows, including its embedded version, WinCE. Accepting Windows applications would overtax our resources at the moment.

We've already added these categories:

Environment :: Handheld
Environment :: Handheld :: Media Player
Environment :: Handheld :: Mobile Phone
Environment :: Handheld :: PDA
Operating System :: SymbianOS

Please start submitting your favorite projects or recategorizing projects that are already in freshmeat and belong here. If you think there are other categories we need or if you have any other questions or suggestions, let us know.

Thanks!

[»] Hehe its imposible to keep up..
by Mr. SmartGuy - Feb 1st 2004 22:20:09

I know exactly what you guys are going through. I worked for a company that wanted me to develope an application for them. Some sort of inventory application allowed them to enter categories. While making it for them I wanted to allow them to alter and add their categories when ever needed. The project manager said it was not needed they have set categories which they wanted to use and will not need to add or alter these categories. Well as you probably alreaday guessed, one month in they call me back to change some of the categories around and add new ones. Even to this day they call me on a monthly bases to change them up. :)
